Ingenuity Wins Big Bonus At Westinghouse Space Center
Carol W. Daugherty, an employee at the Westinghouse Defense and Space Center in Baltimore, received a 3696 bonus for a dental drill inspired solution that eliminates costly replacement pins in Polaris submarine equipment. The Riviera Beach resident suggested drilling out broken connectors to fit new pins, saving money and enabling an European trip. The award is the largest for a space center employee and second-highest for a woman in the company. Separately, Mrs Anne Douglas Byrd, 77, wife of Senator Harry F. Byrd, died in Berryville, Virginia after years of heart illness. She supported her husband from behind the scenes.

Maryland officials, led by Planning Director James J. O Donnell, oppose the Seneca Dam citing need for more data on efficacy. The $500 million federal plan envisions 16 major dams across four states with Seneca as the largest reservoir, risking 44 000 acres of farm and development land. O Donnell noted no firm evidence on downstream water quality impact, delaying full Maryland endorsement.
