Pan American Airways faced an AFL-CIO Transport Workers union strike after failed talks aimed at avoiding a walkout by about 12,000 employees. A federal mediator said negotiations reached an insurmountable impasse as workers began leaving the job within an hour.
James Bisonett resigns as manager of the Francis Scott Key Hotel effective September 1 after a tenure starting in 1962. David A. James of New Cumberland Pa named his successor with a career path from Penn State to the Nathan Hale and other hotels. Board also approved naming the construction project on West Patrick Street the Francis Scott Key Plaza, to begin after union negotiations.
Myersville declares a full-time water ban as emergency pumping continues. Mayor Gilbert S. Stroup notes a $118000 bid for a proposed water system by Elmer St C Maxwell and Associates of Pikesville with bids opening September 21.
State Police report two separate crashes near Ceresville on MD 26 within hours Monday. At 11:50 a.m. Eugene W. Pruitt 64 Grove Boulevard was cited for reckless driving after leaving the highway island and damaging signs. At 1:50 p.m. Anna Katherine Stup RFD 1 Walkersville stopped in a turn lane and was hit on the right rear by Ronald Eugene Doody 19 RFD 1 Frederick. both cars sustained about $300 damage and Doody charged with failure to reduce speed. Trooper W D Drumm investigated.
Maj. Gen. Nguyen Khanh, 37, resigns as South Viet Nam leader amid nationwide protests. Duong Van Minh, ousted nine days earlier, likely caretaker head of state. Junta to elect a premier, then dissolve itself as civilians form a new ruling council with broad party representation.
Hurricane Cleo moves toward Jamaica with 110 mph winds after Haiti, forecast to threaten Cuba's Oriente Province. Evacuations underway in Cuba as Jamaica braces for gales and possible hurricane force winds. The storm travels west northwest at about 15 mph amid market uncertainty in New York.
In Monroe Georgia a crowd of several hundred Negroes clashed with white individuals Monday night. Four Negroes suffered shotgun wounds and the service station owned by a white man was wrecked as the mob shouted at customers. Mrs. Tommy Cooper, wife of the station operator, drove in and was targeted by gunfire. Police Chief Jack Morris cited unclear motives and noted the station had opened less than a month. Monroe lies about 40 miles east of Atlanta.
Attorney General Robert F Kennedy announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to the US Senate from New York. He spoke at Gracie Mansion with Mayor Robert Wagner, outlining a campaign backed by major party insiders. Kennedy has rented a Long Island mansion for Sept 1 and hired a public relations aide. Keating seeks reelection. Republicans and Conservatives prepare separate conventions next week.
In Boonsboro Maryland a meeting of central and western Maryland farmers formed the Natural Weather Association of Maryland to oppose artificial cloud tampering. Donald Spickier led the gathering of nearly 600 at the Farmers Livestock Exchange. Noah Kefauver cited letters from Dr. Wallace Howell about cloud seeding by Howell Associates to prevent hail storms, a practice tied to drought and thin crops across the region.
Houston reports 179 suspected encephalitis cases with 17 deaths in 30 days. City health officer Dr. C A Pigford says a major epidemic is possible as cases spread across the city. Free insecticide distribution via fire stations begins while spraying and fogging increase. Mayor Welch urges residents to bring containers for free insecticide and instructions. Additional nine cases reported since last Friday spur medical appeals.
