A highwayman robbed seven stage coaches near Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park on August 25, securing more than $6000. He forced passengers to surrender money and valuables at rifle point, then allowed the coaches to continue. Government troops chase the bandit. tourists are disarmed by park rules.

Delaware Republicans opened their state convention in Dover with nominees for governor Simeon Pennewill and other statewide offices. The ticket includes William H. Heald for representative, Walter Hoffacker for lieutenant governor, Daniel Hastings for attorney general, Frank H. Davis for treasurer, Theodore F. Clark for state auditor, and Charles H. Maull as state auditor. Hoffecker’s nomination may hinge on his preference to decline. Also notes a separate report of a man with a broken neck after an accidental fall, and a federal court ruling on branding for imitation whisky.
Baron Speck von Sternburg, longtime German ambassador to the United States, died in New York following cancer surgery. Born in Leeds, England, he lived in Washington as ambassador and was noted for his friendship with President Roosevelt. His death follows a career in diplomacy including postings in Calcutta and India.
