First County Absentee Ballots Cast
Frederick County voters cast the first absentee ballots at the Board of Election Supervisors as two residents away on election day applied for ballots and placed marked ballots in a vault box. The delay stemmed from a court ruling on Patrick F. X. McGucken’s candidacy. the Court of Appeals allowed his name on the ballot. Civilians may apply for absentee ballots until Thursday at 4 p.m.

Marines storm Viet training camp near Da Nang
US Marines fought into a Communist training camp 20 miles southwest of Da Nang as others clashed with North Vietnamese regulars farther north. Reported enemy casualties reached 211 with light American losses. Leathernecks attacked a camp where guerrillas mingled with North Vietnamese troops. A spokesman estimated the force at about a battalion, around 600 men, and described enemy fire as extremely heavy.

Canadian Newlyweds Honored Here In Jaycee Welcome Mat Project
A Canadian couple, newlyweds from London Ontario, toured Frederick after a highway stop that revealed their role as Welcome Mat guests. Larry and the Mrs Larmer received city and county keys, a tour of sites, and Jaycee hosted events including a Breezy Grove Park picnic and a free home call from the Bell Canada office. Unemployment Falls to One Percent in Local Area
Miss Mayetta Hershberger of the Maryland Department of Employment Security reports unemployment at one percent, the area's lowest in memory. Last week 82 compensation checks were issued, down from 202 last year, with the August 5 peak showing 382 claims, including 235 women, partly due to American Optical Co. vacation layoffs. Open jobs include stenographers, typists, carpenters, painters, welders, auto mechanics and truck drivers.

Washington AP reports an inquiry into allegations two Maryland contractors overcharged the government by skimping on coats and using inferior paint on the National Bureau of Standards reactor and seven other lab and office buildings in Gaithersburg. Union painter E B Mann claimed savings of at least 75000 for the firms, naming John A Berggren Painting Co Inc and John H Davis Co. as suspects. Berggren called the charges preposterous. Soviets Launch Moon Ship Luna 11 Unmanned Satellite
The Soviet Union launched an unmanned satellite named Luna 11 toward the moon, Tass reported as an automatic space station. Previous Luna missions included Luna 9 with a controlled moon landing on February 3 and Luna 10 with near lunar orbit on April 3, while the U S now has a satellite in lunar orbit. The Luna 11 weighs about 3,615 pounds, and speculation linked to possible animal payloads remained.

Etzler Co Low Bidder On Mt Phillip Road Job
The N W Etzler Co of Frederick was the low bidder for reconstructing Mt Phillip Road with a bid of 26921. The R F Kline Co submitted 27321 as the only other bid. The project covers clearing grading draining and paving a half mile between Butterfly Lane and US 404 to remove a sharp curve and a narrow bridge and allow two way traffic. Work should start in about two weeks and take 35 working days to complete. Bids opened at 11 am in the county engineer’s Winchester Hall office.

Three Youths Injured In Bethel Road Car Crash
A one car crash on Bethel Road left Randall L Sweeney 16 of Thurmont James R Martin 20 and Ronald L Valentine 18 all of Thurmont and Roy J Reed said to be passengers. Charles D Smith 17 also of Thurmont drove south lost control the car ran off the road into a ditch struck a culvert and overturned. Smiths 1954 sedan was demolished.

Frederick detectives hunt an unidentified Black man who knocked Mrs Anna Williams of North Market Street to the ground last night and stole her pocketbook.
