Wabash Surveyor Recommends Frederick Route for Railroad Tunnel
A Wabash surveying party led by G. W. Farrey examined routes westward from Frederick to compare with an existing line of the Western Maryland Railroad. The survey suggested a tunnel over three miles long would be required to pass near Emmitsburg if the Braddock area route were used, while the Frederick county option could avoid such a lengthy tunnel and achieve favorable grades. The survey aimed to measure distance and levels, not commit the company, and work paused near Braddock.
