Jail garden feeds inmates and saves meals grows crops
James Delauter directs a 144 acre jail garden begun three summers ago behind a landfill where inmates including David Smith tend corn peas squash and tomatoes. The project trims grocery costs by about 1500 this year and gives workers teamwork trust and a sense of freedom while limiting duties to nonviolent offenders who contribute to jail operations and kitchen duties. Some inmates hope to plant more corn add an apple tree and keep growing fresh vegetables for staff and former inmates.
