Senate Votes Control Bill in Postwar Inflation Fight
The Senate passed a home front mobilization bill by an 85 to 3 vote allowing President Truman to invoke wage and price controls and rationing broadly if needed. The measure directs simultaneous control across wage and price curbs, while Truman would have freedom to ration consumer goods. He did not request such authority but welcomed standby power without usage limits. The move contrasts with Truman’s stated view that wage-price curbs are unnecessary now.
