Man Buries Savings Fearing Banks Then Digging Up Decayed Money

Washington reports a Morriston Arkansas man C D Earl buried ten thousand dollars to protect it from banks. Decayed greenbacks were largely unreadable when recovered, with only 25 dollars and a 875 check legible. Mrs A E Brown of the redemption division identified most notes after he mailed the remaining fortune to the treasury. In Altoona a ban on sheath gowns led to a young woman’s arrest and release after Mayor Hoyer ordered against such attire.

Indictments Let Alleged Atlantic City Gambling Ring Face Law

A grand jury convened by Supreme Justice Trenchard at Governor Mort’s request returned two indictments against Charles Gondolf of New York and Elward Williams, operator of the Millionaires club in Chelsea, for gambling and Sunday liquor selling. The jury failed to indict two other gambling rooms, citing insufficient evidence, and was warned by Justice Trenchard that local officials failing to enforce the law could face indictment.

Admiral Dewey sails to Portsmouth for Farragut tablet dedication

Admiral Dewey hoisted his flag on the Dolphin and set sail from Washington for Portsmouth New Hampshire to attend the dedication on August 26 of a bronze tablet honoring Rear Admiral Farragut. He then goes to Newport Rhode Island to meet the navy general board before returning in about two weeks.
