Maternity Section To Be Closed At Frederick Emergency Hospital

The State Health Department orders the maternity wing closed by November 30 at Frederick County Emergency Hospital. Local efforts to keep it open failed, with discussions noting Emergency’s lack of first rate status and potential staffing needs. Some doctors oppose continuing care for maternity patients there, citing uneven quality versus Frederick Memorial Hospital. Proposals consider converting Emergency into a county nursing home or infirmary, similar to Allegany county, while Montevue and Emergency remain separate facilities sharing only a laundry and heating plant.

Business Gives Solid Performance

The nations business this week turned in a solid performance for a time of year that's traditionally slow. Although a few soft spots persisted, there were signs of basic strength in the Commerce Department report noting a nine month end to the decline in GNP value of services and foods. Bank clearings, business loans, soft coal production and retail sales showed gains. Oil welcomed firmer prices. Coffee prices fell ten cents a pound as Brazilian export rules eased. The stock market stayed near a year high. Auto output barely rose as dealers prep 1955 models, while Studebaker and Packard won merger approval to form a 751 million dollar company. Steel use and orders from small buyers offset some auto demand, with steel production at 62 percent capacity, down two points.
