Attempts At Bribery Reported In War Assets Office
Washington reports of frequent bribe attempts by unscrupulous businessmen to influence War Assets Administration employees were disclosed. Joseph F. Carroll compliance director urged reporting all offers and noted a nationwide probe to weed out workers with war records. He called bribery a serious problem and urged light be shed on such acts.

The Taneytown and Piney Creek churches held a August meeting at the Misses Unnon home with a lawn supper served cafeteria style. Proceeds fund surgical dressings for an overseas hospital and a playlet and restoration film were presented by local volunteers. Between seventy and sixty guests attended alongside a delegation from Emmitsburg and visitors from Gettysburg.

The New Market Girls 4 H Club met at Mary Catherine and Rebecca Hahn's home with Mary Catherine Hahn presiding. They opened with pledges and sang the 4 H Friendship Song. A weiner roast was postponed to August 30 at Virginia Mainhart's home. Demonstrations on family washing were given by Gertrude and Gloria Hahn. Club Week plans were discussed and the business meeting scheduled for September 5 at Dorothy Moxley's home with a canning demonstration by Gertrude Hahn. Games and refreshments followed.
