President Clinton signs a 90 cent raise lifting the federal minimum wage from 4.25 to 4.75 effective Oct 1 and to 5.15 by Sept 1, 1997. About 10 million workers gain, as Congress passed the measure in a frenzied week ahead of the Democratic convention.
Developers John Eyle and Donald Pleasants, facing a private rubblefill plan on 203 acres west of Libertytown, urge a closed session with Frederick County Commissioners to discuss a possible settlement that could halt further court battles after Maryland Court of Special Appeals reversed a Circuit Court ruling supporting the county’s solid waste ordinance. The case may be appealed again.
The Frederick County Board of Education aims to expand its fiscal 1998 Capital Improvements Plan to address enrollment growth. The plan seeks 29.9 million dollars, with 19.4 million county funds and the rest state funds, to finish Deer Crossing Elementary, build Whittier Elementary, and add to Walkersville Middle and Middletown High. Deer Crossing will open in September 1997, Whittier and the additions in September 1998, adding about 1,400 seats.
The Task Force on Funding for the Maryland School for the Deaf met at the Frederick campus to craft a funding plan. Co chair Sue Hecht said the panel will report in October with ideas to catch up as MSD trails state aid and enrollment growth. MSD has cut security staff and cannot fill teaching vacancies due to limited benefits.
Pinehurst residents led by Peggy Williams place signs along Twin Lake Drive to curb 15 mph speeding after a fatal hit by a car near a similar neighborhood. Williams cites family safety and a memorial at an entrance as motivation. Donald Felix also notes speeding is a problem.
