Maryland and Delaware avoid mass layoffs to date
Maryland and Delaware have used voluntary retirements a job freeze and scattered layoffs to avoid mass firings of state employees. But with the budget situation worsening more layoffs are likely in Maryland in the next few months. Delaware says the situation is under control but will await September revenue projections to decide on further reductions. About 400 Maryland state employees have lost their jobs in the past year while Delaware cut 683 positions through early retirement incentives. Nationwide 13,955 state workers were laid off since the start of the year. Maryland faces a projected 300 million dollar revenue shortfall for the current fiscal year. Delaware expects immediate savings from retirements but larger annual savings in future years.
