Natural oils show promise against bee mites in Maryland study
West Virginia University entomologist James Amrine reports spearmint wintergreen and peppermint oils killed and slowed varroa and tracheal mites in honeybee colonies 60 miles east in Cumberland Maryland. He notes 46 colonies showed healthier bees and near pre invasion levels, while nationwide losses remain high with 50 percent average in 22 states. Researchers test methods include greasy wintergreen tracking strips sugar water mint oil feeds and grease patties to disrupt mite reproduction and kill mites.

Beekeepers Drive Up Demand for Natural Oils at Lorann Oils
Lorann Oils in Lansing, Michigan reports 10 to 15 percent sales growth in natural oils such as peppermint as beekeepers increasingly use them. Pennyroyal oil is currently sold out due to high demand from beekeepers. A 16 ounce bottle of wintergreen costs about $45 for natural oil and $18 for synthetic, enough to treat about 100 honeybee colonies and offers a cheaper, less toxic option than available pesticides, per WVU researcher Dr. Amrine.
