Government Workers Pay Covered By Freeze
Washington AP reports millions of state and local government workers are swept into the Nixon 90 day wage price rent freeze. The Cost of Living Council said government employees at all levels are subject to the freeze and will not receive raises unless their contract began before August 15. The Pentagon initially claimed military pay was exempt but Treasury Secretary Connally said military raises are halted by the freeze. High level talks in Washington and abroad seek to manage the economic shock as Congress and officials weigh legal and practical steps.

School Officials In Salary War
A Frederick County Board of Education official said some teachers will be paid under the new higher scale while others on a 10 month year may have to wait 90 days for raises. The plan could create pay disparities between new hires and veteran staff, with 12 month employees more likely to receive higher wages. About 716 teachers and related staff were on 12 month terms as of July 30, with 80 percent on 10 month schedules. The board warned administrative problems could be horrendous if the half and half interpretation stands.
