New York Senator Kenneth B. Keating announced he will run for a second term, signaling a possible independent bid due to disagreements with Goldwater's ticket. He stressed representing all New York voters and questioned party unity while noting doubts about RFK or Clare Boothe Luce challenging him.
Sen Barry Goldwater aides map a flexible $4.5 million television campaign to counter Democratic moves in the White House race. Plans include filmed and taped programs regional and national, major live appearances on national TV, and radio spots before September.
A front tire blew on a church bus carrying 65 members near San Clemente causing a head on collision with seven vehicles. Eight people died including Deborah Lee Rogers, 12, adopted daughter of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, and 40 injured. The Rev Lawrence Elton White led the bus during the tragedy on U.S. 101 near San Onofre Creek.
Chief Judge Patrick M. Schnauffer led a session assigning trial dates in Circuit Court for over 50 cases. Judge Robert E. Clapp Jr. sat with the bench as trials run from Monday through September 3, focusing largely on motor vehicle conviction appeals from magistrates court. Walter Pencola, who declined court-appointed counsel, will defend himself on an assault charge with a trial set for August 27.

They were investigating reports of planned reprisals against refugees and had planned to urge Watusi refugees from Rwanda to stay away from politics and rebel forces retreating toward the camp.
Police contained a second riot in the Dixmoor suburb as rock throwing injured two and 40 people were arrested for disorderly conduct or inciting a riot. The unrest followed an incident at a liquor store near the center of the disturbance. Civil rights leaders and clergy criticized police tactics including canine patrols. The town, 5 000 population, lies two miles south of Chicago.
The United Auto Workers rejected three year contracts from General Motors Ford and Chrysler edging toward a possible strike. The union will decide which automaker to target at a Thursday meeting in Chicago as negotiations fail to meet demands for breaks and improved pensions.
Will Adams, an ex-slave in Atmore Alabama, plans to reach 120 on Thursday. At 114, he still boasts of river log rolling and past work at a sawmill, though a fall from a pecan tree two years ago has slowed him. His daughter Mattie Thomas notes he now visits a physician and keeps closer to the ground.
Washington AP A production rise of nearly 150 billion over the Kennedy Johnson years will beat the Eisenhower era gains, White House economist Walter W Heller told platform writers. He said the economy would fuel the prosperity campaign for Johnson in November as the first administration in over a century without recession or depression. Dillon spoke of possible tax overhauls and tax cuts ahead. Behind the scenes Southerners sought to avert a civil rights plank fight at the convention.
