Long Drink Of Water Helps Shade Trees
Shade trees will be thirstier than ever this year and require extra water at first sign of a dry spell. Wil iam W. White of the Bartlett Tree Expert Co notes lush foliage in healthy trees increases water needs, while weakened trees struggle to uptake soil moisture. Secondary leaf growth from recent rains adds to leaf surface and transpiration, needing replenishment to keep trees vigorous.

Watering trees helps fight drought threats and pests
In hot weather tree owners should water to prevent borers and bark beetles targeting weakened trees. Soak soil to a sufficient depth and let the hose run over root surfaces overnight. Feeding in midsummer may aid trees as effectively as watering, says Mr. White.
