In Virginia near Shenandoah two-car collision on U S Route 12 left Ernest Cash dead at Page Memorial Hospital. Paul E. Fogle 25 of Frederick Maryland suffered head and knee lacerations and was expected to be released in a few days. He is the son of Mr and Mrs James R Fogle of 119 West Fourth street and a Frederick High School faculty member.
A Caribbean hurricane aimed for the Gulf of Mexico after devastating Jamaica with winds up to 130 mph. Jamaica reports 109 dead and $56 million in damage as lengthier impact on Yucatan and coastal Texas looms. The center passed south of Merida with strong winds and large gales extending outward. Radio and telecommunications were down amid mounting destruction.
Ernest W. Beahm, 66, of Clarksburg died when his car struck a tree in Barnesville. His wife, 60, was badly hurt and listed in poor condition in a Bethesda hospital. Also hospitalized were Mr. and Mrs. John Priest, of Clarksburg.
Three Black travelers from Charles Town West Virginia on the way to Bel Air races were injured when their car crashed into a tree on Route 340 near Petersville. Driver Henry R. Smith 35 suffered deep facial lacerations. Elaine Smith 35 had a possible knee fracture. Grover Rideoutte 17 had a neck laceration and sprained ankle. All were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital. Sgt Richard Stallings investigated. Smith said he fell asleep and that he is a horse trainer.
A Michigan driver ran a red light at Patrick and Bentz streets about 8 25 this morning, colliding with a northbound car. Thomas W Ballard 1951 Ford from Selfridge Mich sustained over 50 dollars damage. William Thompson 1934 Chevrolet from Route 1 Tramsville suffered under 50 dollars. Officer McKeldin investigated. In a separate Buckeystown incident a 1950 pickup driven by KE H Clontz of Mocksville NC and a 1942 sedan driven by Douglas L West of Frederick each suffered about 50 dollars damage. Clontz was charged with failure to signal and West with reckless driving.
Washington August 20 reporters quote two Republican senators describing RFC investigations as showing Truman and DNC chairman Boyle moved Pendergast politics to the national level. Democrats call the charges substantiated, citing hearings after Truman's rebuke of the preliminary report. Senator McCarthy says he will not seek minority views from three other Republicans.
The Frederick Board of Education opened bids totaling about 300000 for a proposed East Frederick Elementary School with eight classrooms a multipurpose room kitchen and offices. L J Keller submitted the low total bid at 315000 with detailed plumbing heating electrical and equipment costs.
Berlin reports the Communist Youth Festival closed with large Red banners and chants pledging to Stalin. About two million indoctrinated youths visited East Berlin and West Berlin, with one million visiting the west for meals or observation. Western observers call the event a near disaster for Communism in Germany and warn Moscow of possible Western-leaning shifts among youth returned home.
Marshall Bartgis a 31 year old resident near McKaig was found dead in the family barn this morning. The medical examiner ruled death by his own hand after he reportedly returned from Springfield State Hospital six weeks ago and had been watched by relatives. Bartgis died by tying a rope to a hay fork and jumping from a log. he leaves parents Luther W and Ellen R Main Bartgis and siblings Carl, Robert, Eva, James, Ruth, William, Richard and two others. The body rests at Etchison and Son Funeral Home with services scheduled for Wednesday at two o'clock and burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit after seven tonight.
Washington reports President Truman seeks additional relief and rehabilitation funds for flood areas. Frederick County’s Red Cross quota has been doubled to 2800 dollars after a survey showed widespread destruction and more homeless people. Contributions are voluntary at the Red Cross office on West Second Street.
The Associated Press reports thousands of acres burned across Oregon and Washington with 15 000 acres ablaze in the Pacific Northwest. Bonny Slope near Portland faced evacuation as a major Siuslaw blaze charred 8 000 to 10 000 acres. California's 40 lightning fires and cooler fronts toward the northern Rockies followed a day of varied weather nationwide.

South Korea's Foreign Minister Pyun Yng Tai said no permanent line of political demarcation would be accepted and rejected a cease fire buffer along the 28th Parallel. He urged UN to continue war aims and unite Korea under South Korean control despite calls for a buffer generally north of 38. Supervisory inspections behind front lines would face Communist objections.

Prince Georges county police chief FL Allen Richards called the Senate Crime committee premature in its push against gambler Charles B. Nelson. Richards said the raid found only chickens and vegetables, not gambling slips, and urged probing Calvert county where Nelson operated. Nelson later said he would answer charges and planned to hire an attorney as he awaited further committee questions.
