An explosion on a tar truck at West Fifth and Bentz streets at 10 15 AM hurled the 50 pound tank end to the sidewalk eighty feet away and shattered windows in four homes. Driver Charles Harley was burned and shaken. aide Walter Sharrer was severely burned. Fire, police and city officials responded as residents watched a smoky scene with damaged autos and watermelons crushed by the tank.
