Ford trails Reagan by a narrow margin in the AP tally as the 1976 Republican National Convention opens. Delegates and uncommitted voters loom large while floor fights over running mate disclosure and a foreign policy plank test the candidates.
Philippine disaster officials report at least 811 dead, 249 missing, and 251 injured after two major quakes in Mindanao and Basilan. Unofficial counts rise to 917 dead with 500-plus injured and 400 missing as 1,290 families become homeless and 315 structures are destroyed in Basilan, Pagadian, Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro and Cotabato.
