A tornado spawned by a sharp temperature drop damaged a shed and farm equipment on the Lloyd Brandenburg farm along Penn Shop Road near Kemptown. Cows were unharmed, limbs torn from trees blocked roads, and 0.22 inch of rain fell as temperatures plunged 17 degrees.
Detroit based United Auto Workers urge automakers to reopen 1964 three year contracts for higher wages to begin next Monday. UAW seeks substantial raise for skilled tradesmen, citing current Detroit carpenters at 4.63 and electricians at 5.20 hourly, tool and die makers at 3.87 in Big Three plants, with a 25 percent figure floated. Ford counters reopening would be inadvisable as 1967 models roll out.
About 100 people attended a public hearing on the proposed Jefferson sanitary district amid findings that 20 percent of wells in Jefferson area show contamination. State health officials urged facilities, while opponents cited lack of majority support, insufficient evidence of need, economic burden, and delaying master development plans.
An Iraqi air force captain defected to Israel in a MIG 21, the first Soviet top aircraft in Israeli hands. Brig. Mordechai Hod said plans exist for the plane and noted safe escort from the Jordan border. The pilot cited his Catholic faith and desire to stop bombing Kurdish rebels, moving his family out of Iraq before signaling his defection. He flew from Rashid Air Base, crossed Jordan into Israel, and trained in the Soviet Union before joining the Iraqi fleet.
Frederick County wins one of two drought aid requests from the U S Department of Agriculture for diverted acreage to hay and pasture. Howard and Kent Counties receive similar aid. The program blends land diversion and feed grain plans to ease feed shortages from the drought impacting 540 farms across 12 885 acres. Farmers lease land to the government who pays rent, while rates and committee decisions govern pastures usage and wheat program terms.
A meeting led by U S Rep Charles McC Mathias proposes a three point plan to aid drought hit farmers in Western Maryland. It calls for low or no interest loans, supervised grants for young farmers, and fair prices, plus better farm non farm understanding and use of surpluses for emergencies.
The I-70 project from Braddock Mountain to Hollow Road advances this week. S. J. Groves and Sons of Camp Hill PA rebuild a 2.48 mile section at over 2.5 million dollars. Overall 25 mile Frederick to Hagerstown route to cost more than 25 million. completion anticipated in 1968.
In Fairfax Ohio the volunteer firemen, led by President Rollie French, told the village council they do not desire remuneration. The group said they have no wish to add to local tax burdens while serving the community.
A U S Marine F8E Crusader heavily laden with bombs crashed after takeoff from Da Nang killing at least 26 villagers. Pilot 1st Lt Walter J Doherty parachuted but survived largely uninjured. Marines landed on the coast in Deckhouse 3 as part of Operation Toledo. US air and sea forces conducted saturation bombardment and new ground actions faced monsoon rains. Premier Ky urged more American troops while North Vietnamese targets were pummeled by bombers.
Public tours of the Governor Thomas Johnson High School on North Market Street begin tonight. Sponsored by the County Commissioners with the Second Annual Report to the People. Displays by county departments open at 7:30 p.m. in the lobby. The report presentation at 8 p.m. in the auditorium highlights county activities over the past 18 months.
