Suspension gaps loom large in MontCo schools
Montgomery County Schools face a sharp disparity with black students suspended at nearly triple the rate of white peers. Superintendent Wilmer Cody plans intensive research with principals and parents to uncover root causes and considers giving principals more discretion. He cites in-school suspensions and a need to reevaluate policy while targeting schools with low suspension rates for study. The issue will be a priority during his term as he and NAACP leaders stress equitable discipline and improved learning environments.
