Aiken and Martin Hit Truman on Mobilization Pace
Aug 13 news from Wading shows Sen Aiken and Sen Martin criticizing President Truman for delaying wage price rationing and home front mobilization. They accuse political timing of delaying actions on controls and taxes amid wartime needs, while the Senate moves toward an economic controls bill. Aiken says the president kept the public in the dark about global gravity and the November elections drive the delay. Also reports DeVries held for larceny in Westminster after thefts from a parked car on East Main Street, investigated by State Police Corporal Simmons.

Berlin reports a Western victory in the Kilowatt Battle after two years of Soviet power blockades. An old Berlin power plant, financed by Marshall Plan funds, operated to restore supply in Western sectors, yielding a relief dubbed a miracle as Russians paused cuts and agreed to resume deliveries, though capacity remains under 200,000 kilowatts next year.

Berlin Rebuilds as US Rebuilds Power Plant
In September 1949 the Economic Cooperation Administration aided the Marshall Plan by providing over 16.5 million dollars to rebuild a power station. More than 2,000 German engineers and laborers worked around the clock as 1,500 tons of heavy machinery arrived by airlift. Some pieces required cutting for transport, then welding. A Berlin housewife hailed the recovery saying Americans gave electricity to warm homes and cook meals, while Russians built monuments.
