Cheaper Timbering Method Introduced in Washington County

HAGERSTOWN Aug 12 A new cheaper timbering method is being shown to Washington County woodland owners. Amos Reeder of Boonsboro adopts a girdling technique with hatchet bark removal followed by arsenite application to induce rapid bark loosening and tree death. Reeder aims to log this fall and haul pulpwood to a Pennsylvania paper concern. Forester Jack Karnig of the Maryland Department assists, noting the method efficiently harvests hardwoods too small for lumber.

Arson Charge Looms Over Hagerstown Business Leader

Charles W. Lightner, 55, president of the Home Food Planing Co., released on 500 bond pending a Tuesday hearing on an arson charge for a July 31 fire that destroyed a two story frame building housing the firm. Fire officials cited a flash nature and lacquer odor at the start of the blaze after two weeks of investigation by the sheriff and state’s attorney. Also, Civitan district meeting at Key Hotel in Frederick was postponed due to Hurricane Connie, with many seaboard delegates canceled. A laying hen has a productive life of 10 to 12 months.
