Blight Kills Chestnut Trees Across the Nation
The article tracks the American chestnut decline from a deadly blight that began in New York in 1904 to current breeding efforts. Scientists cross American trees with blight-resistant Oriental varieties, especially Chinese chestnuts, to develop resistant hybrids. Progress includes first-generation trees growing about 22 feet high, backcrosses near Chinese resistance, and releases of orchard varieties like Kuling Meiling and Nanking. The program aims to restore chestnuts for forest, orchard, and global germ plasm, with Italy’s blight looming as a reminder of urgency.

Critical Time Of Year For Beef Calves
College Park Maryland reports two critical periods for beef calves regarding feed. University of Maryland expert Edwin R Conner notes feed is scarcer as pastures thin, recommending creep feeds for purebred and commercial calves to improve uniformity and eye appeal. He lists conditions when creep feeding pays and when it should be avoided, warning of weight loss after weaning if overused.

Reporter's Quiz on Mulches for Trees and Shrubs
A reader query explains mulching as essential for trees and shrubs to endure a hot summer. It notes suitable materials such as sphagnum moss, compost, marsh hay, or similar mulch placed around the base of a plant.
Mulches Help Protect Shrubs From Summer Heat
Dr. Philip L Rusden warns that heat damage to trees and shrubs increases in hot weather. Mulching stabilizes soil temperatures and preserves moisture near the trunk, with needles left on the ground. Evergreen groups especially need mulch to prevent root cooking during extreme heat.
