Mrs Carter Deems Pope Paul a Wise and Beloved Symbol

First lady Rosalynn Carter arrived in Rome to lead the U S delegation at Pope Paul VI funeral. She praised the late pope as a wise and beloved symbol of mankind and spoke of his social justice and care for the poor. The Vatican released a handwritten testament inviting pardon and urging love and service of the world. The pope’s body remained on display at St Peter's Basilica until hours before the funeral.

Pope Paul VI Calls for Simple, Pious Funeral and Personal Closures

Vatican City AP reports Pope Paul VI wrote in 1965 and added notes in 1972 and 1973 calling for a very simple funeral, no tomb or monument, and for most personal possessions to go to the Holy See. He asks pardon from those he may have wronged and urges destruction of personal writings. He died at 80 as the Vatican stresses simplicity in his funeral.

Piper plans Moscow return to continue reporting

Harold D. Piper, Moscow correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, said he will return to Moscow next week for another year. He believes the uproar over his Soviet court conviction is over and he will be allowed to stay. Piper and Craig R. Whitney of the New York Times were convicted last month of slandering Soviet television and were ordered to print retractions and pay $83,530 in court costs, which they and their papers refused to do.
