Ford rivals swirl around VP picks in bid for delegates
Ford and Reagan pursue a broad vice presidential search to win delegates. Reagan named Sen. Richard Schweiker, a liberal choice, sparking mixed reactions. A list of potential names includes Connally, Baker, Bond, Brock, Brooke, Buckley, Domenici, Hatfield, Percy, Richardson, Scranton, Simon, Weicker, and others as the campaign signals openness to many factions. Ford vows a middle ground while Feinstein-like pressure grows for an early announcement.

Democrats plan door-to-door campaign under new federal law
Frederick County Democrats face spending caps under a new federal campaign finance rule and will run a largely door-to-door effort to reelect Congressman Goodloe Byron and back Senate candidate Paul Sarbanes. The committee, led by Wallace Hutton, notes a $2,473.76 ceiling and plans a shared headquarters with all three candidates represented at the Frederick meeting. Sixteen details include a Sept. 1 Annapolis state session and appointment of Mary Singleton as treasurer, with past spending cited and future campaigns to be tailored to the law.
