US USDA projections forecast a 1990 corn harvest near 7.85 billion bushels, up 4 percent from 1989 and the largest since 1986, despite drought in the southeast. Soybeans and wheat also rise while overall stockpiles edge down as demand grows into the 1990-91 marketing year.
Several large oil firms cut wholesale or pump prices by 1 to 4 cents a gallon while others froze prices for a week or until mid August. Exxon Mobil and Shell avoided hikes, as Bush urged restraint amid Persian Gulf tensions. AAA noted average self service unleaded at 1.237 dollars a gallon, up modestly from the prior day.
Operating losses at 350 RTC controlled S&Ls totaled 1.35 billion in January to March, up 35 percent from 1989. Analysts say higher losses reflect worse run institutions or aging assets, plus rate shifts. The RTC plans to close or sell 130 thrifts in H2 1990, needing Congress bailout funds to sustain operations.
