Old Age Tax Frozen At 1 Percent
Washington August 16 the old age and survivors tax was frozen at 1 percent for another year as President Truman signed Social Security revisions. The measure boosts federal aid by about 150 million dollars yearly for needy persons in all states and keeps the Social Security tax at 1 percent for employees and employers to avoid a January rise to 2.5 percent. It also adds aid for 2 million aged persons and 75,000 blind people, about 3 dollars more for 772,000 dependent children, and provides three years of survivors insurance for World War II veterans families at about 160 dollars a month for a widow and 16 dollars per month for a child. The plan costs an estimated 175 million dollars through 1949.
