Jap Beetle Drive Ends In Frederick County
The seasonal campaign against the Japanese beetle closed in Frederick County on Wednesday with reports of a decline in beetle numbers in infested areas and some spread into previously unaffected regions. County Agent Henry R Shoemaker credited spore dust on farms for declines in southern districts, while officials noted hot dry weather last August may also have reduced beetle and egg numbers. Reports by Avery Browning show declines in New Market Urbana Buckeystown Brunswick Jefferson Fetersville and Burkittsville areas where beetles first appeared, though Liberty and north of Woodsboro saw higher counts. Very few beetles remain and they typically disappear by August 10.
