Cornwallis and Clinton Clash Over Virginia Reinforcements
In early 1781 Cornwallis argued reinforcements could crush colonial resistance in Virginia. Clinton in New York feared a French American attack and ordered 3,000 of Cornwallis troops to the city. As Cornwallis barged to Portsmouth, Clinton relented and told him to hold a strong Chesapeake position at Yorktown if possible.
