City weighs dog ban at events in proposed ordinance

Frederick officials informally approve an ordinance banning dogs at city public and special events including the Fourth of July celebration and Baker Park concerts. The draft, considered by the mayor and Board of Aldermen, states dogs are not permitted whether leashed or not.

Frederick County Schools Face Crowding Through 2003 2004

The 1996 Educational Facilities Master Plan update shows enrollment in Frederick County rising from about 33,000 last year to 34,200 this year and 35,600 next year with projections hitting 43,100 by 2005. New schools opening this September and next year add 709 seats each, but analysts say one project annually cannot keep pace with growth as middle and high schools remain crowded under current and planned capital improvement schedules.

Hospitals face shared costs for uninsured patients plan

Frederick Memorial Hospital estimates paying over 1 million dollars annually under a Maryland plan to pool hospital charges for the uninsured. The plan would fund seven hospitals including Johns Hopkins and Maryland Medical Center, while rural and suburban facilities would contribute. Public comment invited within 30 days ahead of potential September implementation.

Bartlett donation bounced back to gun owners group

The Gun Owners of America Political Victory Fund returned a $6,700 check to Rep. Roscoe Bartlett R 4th after Bartlett earlier gave the money back amid allegations about GOA director Larry Pratt. Bartlett then pledged to donate an identical amount to 6th district crime prevention and firearms safety nonprofits. Pratt denied ties to radical militia groups and GOA expressed disappointment.

Trials set for four Frederick teens in murder case

Four Frederick teenagers accused of stabbing Adrian Pilkington and throwing him from a Potomac River bridge will face separate two week trials in Frederick County Circuit Court. The defendants Whitman Nance Jensen and Woolridge, all indicted on first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and assault with intent to murder, remain in detention as adults. Trials span Nov 21 through Jan 17 with gag order in place.

Man begins sentence for DWI homicide in Maryland

A Frederick man, 29, returned to Frederick County Detention Center after reinstatement of a DWI homicide sentence for the April 25, 1993 crash that killed Thomas Blank Jr. on New Design Road. The case involved prior appeals over the use of victim photographs influencing jurors.
