Parachute Hero Rankin Emerges From 47000-Foot Storm Flight

Marine Lt Col William H Rankin survived a 47000 foot unplanned parachute jump lasting about 40 minutes through a violent thunderstorm after a Crusader jet engine failed. He suffered frostbite and a broken hand but was later aided to a hospital in Ahoskie North Carolina. Rankin eyes possible scientific value noting a man could survive a parachute jump from near 50000 feet if the aircraft stays below sound speed. He lands in a tree and is helped by a boy and his father with local transport to care.
