Fish ladders urged for Conowingo Dam on Susquehanna
The U S Fish and Wildlife Service urged construction of a fish ladder at Conowingo Dam and three upstream dams to revive the shad run on the Susquehanna. The agency also proposed the utility pay 25000 yearly to Pennsylvania to breed and release shad. Maryland had accepted 4000 a year in damages since 1926. The Susquehanna Power Co operates the dam and faces a potential multi million dollar cost for ladders. The state fisheries division indicated renewal of compensation is unlikely and urged immediate installation of fish passages.
