The Frederick newspaper issue dated Saturday August 7 1965 features local and regional news briefs. It covers community events, public notices, and updates on civic matters affecting Frederick and surrounding areas.
Frederick post office should be retained as the sectional center for the area. Postmaster James A Grove told members of the National Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The center handles mail for Frederick and Washington counties and parts of Carroll and Howard counties, with ZIP codes starting 217. The committee acted after learning of efforts in Hagerstown to move the center.
Chairman Francis W. Bush Sr. urged members to write Senators Tydings and Brewster on the subject. He pressed for inquiry into the Frederick Post Office building program planned five years ago and promised this year. Frederick was selected as sectional center because it lies roughly equidistant from Baltimore and Washington, while Hagerstown would require back hauling. Frederick is closer to key air mail sources.
Postmaster Grove states that satellite Post Offices near Frederick handle more mail, reducing transport costs compared with Hagerstown and neighboring hubs. Processing began July 1 with the State Farm Insurance office opening, boosting local mail volume by about 61 percent in recent weeks.
