Minneapolis Fire Kills Eleven In Downtown Blaze
Eleven men perished in a three story Minneapolis building fire in the early hours. Four people were hospitalized in critical condition and nine escaped, some via a rope from the top floor. Fire officials traced the blaze to a wooden exterior stairway and noted the interior of the second and third floors were destroyed while the first floor suffered lighter damage. Preliminary loss was about 150000 dollars. The building at 200 East Nennepin housed three businesses and 33 rooming units. Police said no rear escape and a two foot steel ladder offered the only chance to leave.

Retiring Fort Detrick Scientist Named Dr Riley D Housewright
Thirty two Fort Detrick employees retired last Friday to qualify for a 5.6 percent increase in retirement annuities. Among the retirees was Dr Riley D Housewright scientific director who served 26 years. He became Fort Detrick Scientific Director in 1956 after leading Medical Bacteriology Division and held multiple roles from 1946 to 1952. He earned a PhD in bacteriology from the University of Chicago in 1944.

Smith Named Associate Principal at TJ High School
Frederick County Board of Education approved Robert G. Smith as associate principal at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. Smith has led adult and continuing education, business and driver education, and evening programs and replaces J. Arthur Mott who left for a Talbot County principalship. He has worked in Frederick schools since 1965 and previously taught at Middletown High and TJ High, chairing the social studies department.

Probation Ordered In Drug Trial
Two youths charged with possession of mari juana and drug paraphernalia faced magistrate court under a new state law that treats a first offense as a misdemeanor. Dennis Creager 19 of Wilson Place and Patty Roy Smith 18 of Swansboro N C pleaded no contest and received probation before verdict. Det. George Himes and Det. Lt. Paul W. Mossburg arrested them July 7 at the city watershed. Magistrate Byron W. Thompson ordered strict probation supervised by the Department of Parole and Probation.
