Kevin Maruskin, 35, dumped about 200 soaked albums across two lawns and a common area to dry after a burst pipe flooded his Whittier townhouse basement. The collection includes records by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Goons Harrison, Adam Ant, and other artists. Some are not worth keeping, but he plans to hold onto them until they dry out or are replaced.
Citizens question a proposed salary increase from 30000 to 50000 per year with a split response from legislators. Frederick resident Tom Speak, 65, calls it unfair, while Deputy Tim Ferguson says full time status might shift positions. Some support by one delegate, others oppose noting personal pay scales. The unemployment rate stayed at 4.5 percent as July payrolls fell for the second month in a row by about 42,000, far smaller than June's 93,000 drop. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao called the steady rate a sign the economy may be past the worst, with analysts divided on whether unemployment will rise later.
Four local youths traveled to Ohio to compete in the world championship soapbox race in Akron. Dustin Fishman and Josh Chamier each won stock division while Dewn O’Byrne took a master’s division victory. The group trained at a prep camp and practiced with celebrities during a weeklong event. Dawn Hagan reached the second round as 400 racers gathered in Akron for Father's Day weekend.
An Ellicott City man, Alan Bruce Chmumny, is now charged with murder by a Howard County grand jury. He previously faced first degree assault, with a maximum of 25 years, for allegedly pouring mercury into the vents of Marta Bradley's Ford Taurus in April 2000. Investigators reported mercury vapor levels found in the car and Bradley, whom Chmumny had dated, was also involved in a prior harassment case.
