Civil War Medicine Conferees Spotlight Living Faith of Soldiers
At Hood College the sixth annual Conference on Civil War Medicine heard Rev. John Schildt recount Southern soldiers joining revival camp meetings during the war. He cited a great revival among Stonewall Jackson’s troops in 1862 and baptisms near Antietam Creek before Gettysburg, estimating 7,500 to 10,000 converts. The talk noted Union soldiers prayed, while Gen. Robert E. Lee endured illness and a March 1863 heart attack. Dr. Bonnie Dorwart weighed Lee’s health on his command decisions. The three-day conference concluded Sunday.
