More than 700 travel weary but high spirited cyclists rolled into Frederick on Friday. It was their last overnight stop of a seven week 3 200 mile coast to coast journey to raise awareness for the American Lung Association fight against lung disease. The riders are part of GTE s first Big Ride Across America the largest cross country bicycling event in history. Each rider must raise a minimum 6 000 in pledges to participate in the Big Ride. Norm Smith 62 of Columbus has raised about 9 500 the longest ride for him. He needed doctor clearance. Eric Meneely a bicyclist from Wayne PA gives a high five as they coast down New Design Road Friday.
An industry arbitrator awarded Merrill Lynch 202000 in damages and lifted the injunction against Smith Barney after ruling against three former Merrill brokers Gregory Beal Jr Thomas Evich and Michael Clabaugh who joined Smith Barney. Merrill Lynch says Smith Barney may still be restricted from soliciting clients while clients can move accounts.
Frederick Municipal Airport spans 588 acres and supports 839 jobs, boosting the local economy by 60 million dollars. City airport manager Charles Abell cites the Maryland Aviation Administration plan as a measure of these effects.
Frederick County jobless rate rose to 2.9 percent in June as summer hiring boosts services. A Frederick airport economic impact study breaks down direct at 6.3 million, indirect 24.3 million, and induced 29.4 million in local effects. The airport, a FAA reliever, lies near I 70 and 1270, aiding traffic beyond BWI Dulles and Reagan.
The National Museum of Civil War Medicine will relocate to temporary housing for 10 to 12 months as a $2 million renovation begins this winter.
