Health planners OK higher Homewood renovation costs
A Western Maryland health planning committee recommended the renovation of the former Francis Scott Key Hotel into Homewood Center proceed, despite costs rising to about 4.0 million from the original 1.0 million. Project head John H. Lloyd Jr. of Homewood urged continuation, noting the center would house 170 elderly residents with a mixed payment plan and ample services. The plan awaits the Health Systems Agency and Maryland Comprehensive Health Planning Agency approvals. The hotel will offer residential and nursing care with daily rates roughly 25 to 42 dollars, depending on care level, and a staff of 12. The Frederick County participants include Mrs. Denis Lee, Nicholas Leakins, and Mrs. Dixie Miller.

The Western Maryland Health Plan agency notes higher costs but the former Francis Scott Key Hotel is being refurbished for 160 future residents. Plans include smaller upper floors with wider halls to meet fire codes, singles rooms, and a third floor roof garden while maintaining services like a lounge, Wellsmere Shop corner, and potential health care training spaces. The center aims for 24 hour elderly care, with first admissions possible by March 1979 and full occupancy in about six months. A public information center has operated since July, with some staff hiring by year end. The Carroll County Women's Center marks its first birthday with a public celebration Sept 19 at East End School.
