Progress cited in SALT talks in Helsinki meeting

President Ford and Soviet leader Brezhnev reported encouraging progress toward a SALT arms agreement during their Helsinki summit. Ford, en route to Bucharest, said details were being worked out by technicians. Kissinger called the session hopeful for implementing Vladivostok decisions as Geneva negotiators press toward a 10 year treaty.

Unemployment Drops in July Defying Forecasts

The July unemployment rate fell to 8.4 percent from 8.6 percent, surprising most economists. Employment rose by 630,000 to 85.1 million while the labor force climbed to 92.9 million as auto jobs added despite metals industry losses. Inflation also surprised, with consumer prices up 0.8 percent versus expectations of 0.4 percent.

Postal Department to secure land for employee parking near Frederick

The Post Office Department plans to buy about 40 000 square feet of land near Carter Street and East Patrick Street in Frederick to provide parking for postal employees. Penn Central and Bowers Lumber own parts of the tracts, with negotiations ongoing and no sites officially purchased yet. Construction of a 5.09 million dollar main post office and center is slated for late this year, aiming for spring 1977 occupancy.

Ohio youth survives crash after car overturns and catches fire

16 year old Mark Bruce Reddin of Bowling Green Ohio escaped serious injury when his westbound vehicle towing an empty horse trailer ran off the road and overturned before burning. He sustained facial and arm burns and was hospitalized. His dog died in the fire and Reddin was charged with negligent driving.

Senators claim budget control victory over defense bill

Senators tout a Budget Control victory after the defeat of a 31.2 billion weapons authorization bill 48 to 42 in the Senate. The measure would have exceeded May targets and sparked a push for lower funding and a renewed conference with the House.

Rural mail routes expanded in Frederick area

The United States Postal Service will expand Frederick rural routes from ten to thirteen on Aug 16. New routes 11 12 and 13 will affect 5 354 mailboxes with renumbering and use of house numbers where possible to speed deliveries and reduce carrier workload. About 1 120 residents will change route numbers and a 80 percent renumbering is planned.
