Plane crashes into cars at Frederick Municipal Airport

A 7:50 am mishap occurred when a Cessna 182 pilot attempted a manual start. The plane taxied across a grass strip and struck two unoccupied cars in a gravel lot, with no injuries reported. FAA and EPA were notified. police said scene details were unavailable.

Frederick County Charter Board Appointed by Commissioners

The Frederick County Commissioners named nine citizens to the Charter Board including Galen Clagett and Samuel W. Barrick. Others are Bonnie Bailey-Baker Gary Hughes J Thomas Routzahn Franklin Gladhill Robert Kresslein Richard Floyd Patricia Swisher McGill and two unnamed nominees. The board must draft a charter within a year with first meeting set for Aug 8 at Winchester Hall.

Downtown Frederick traffic plan eyed for December end

Officials from the Greater Frederick Development Corp. told about 50 attendees at a public meeting that solutions to the downtown traffic congestion should be in place by the end of December. Mayor Gordon and city leaders attended as merchants urged measures to draw customers downtown and reduce truck traffic before noon.

Sugarloaf project gets $700000 grant for land preservation

Montgomery County Council unanimously approved a 700000 grant to the American Farmland Trust to preserve 339 acres at the Sugarloaf Mountain foot. The land straddles Montgomery and Frederick counties, owned by Leo Seligson, with Ed Thompson of Dickerson arranging an option to buy. The trust will repay the county over two years as part of a 2.4 million price, while the Frederick County portion near Mount Ephram Road may be sold to the state for recreation if talks succeed.

Creek bridges to close for Carroll Creek flood work

Frederick will begin the next to last phase of the Carroll Creek Flood Control project this fall or winter from College Avenue to South Court Street. West Patrick and Bentz streets bridges will be torn down for culverts and replaced with detours during construction. A new bridge beside College Avenue will also be built to carry overflow water. A state grant of 1.2 million funds the West Patrick Street bridge. the rest, about 10 to 12 million, will be shared by the city Frederick County and state governments.

Senate report cites 1990 murder toll set to top records

A Senate Judiciary Committee forecast projects 23,220 murders in 1990, surpassing the 1989 figure and the 1980 record. It links rising killings to scarce cocaine, a growing arsenal of assault rifles, unemployment and teenage crime, while NRA officials dispute the weapon impact claim.

Trash hauler bids to overturn county landfill ban

LCCC Disposal Inc of Tuscarora seeks to overturn a 30 day ban from the Frederick County landfill after a July 17 incident. County officials say the truck delivered out of county waste and was refused dumping, triggering the temporary prohibition. A hearing with the Frederick County Commissioners was postponed and rescheduled amid the dispute.
