Cornu Field Sprayed To Kill Beetles Near Poolesville
A 4 acre field near Poolesville in Frederick County was sprayed with DDT insecticide by a private company to eradicate Japanese beetles threatening corn and sugar crops. Dr. Ralph Tracey of Zitt Organte Chemicals, Inc. said the spraying could take about 48 hours to confirm full eradication, with some sections showing few beetles shortly after. The plane delivered 50 gallons of 10 percent solution, about four gallons per acre, over three trips, at 70 to 80 mph. The spray covered leaves and stalks up to about half the height, aiming to prevent beetles from moving to uncovered areas. Rain will not reduce the solvent’s effect, and the spray is expected to protect the crop for three to four weeks through maturation. The test used roughly two pounds of DDT per acre, below toxic levels, with no after effects anticipated in the mature crop.
