Firemen Seek Lights on Responding Vehicles at Thurmont Meet
Frederick County volunteer firemen approved a resolution to seek changes in motor vehicle laws allowing individual firemen to display warning lights on responding vehicles. The plan, debated at Thurmont on Thursday, will go to the Maryland State Firemen’s Association for consideration before the General Assembly. New officers were elected and a parade capped the convention, with a prize list of 200 and a pledge to attend the fire school at the University of Maryland.

Two Youths Held For Taking R R Lewis Car
State Police report two youths ages 14 and 16 are in custody over the July 11 theft of R Rush Lewis sedan from Frederica parking. They are detained at Montevue awaiting juvenile court action. The younger was found in Westminster, the older at Camp Ritchie with State Guard. A typewriter from the Lewis car was recovered in Westminster. The machine had been found abandoned in Carroll County last week. Custody transferred to Mrs. Louise Rodrick, county probation officer, pending Juvenile Court disposition.

Law Thwarts Pair From Marry In Allegany County
A 52 year old widower from Barton and a 13 year old girl sought marriage at the Allegany County courthouse but Maryland law forbids such a union despite parental consent. The man, a miner with 14 children, studied the age limits and then planned to seek permission in Pennsylvania. One of his adult children, a World War II veteran, helped block the plan. the case stirred Barton residents.

Missionary Bishop Sees Hope for Japan Revival
New York August 1 The retiring Protestant Episcopal Bishop Henry St George Tucker who spent 75 years as a missionary in Japan believes evangelism may have a stronger chance with future workers. He cites postwar discrediting of traditional beliefs and Japan’s growing awareness of reliance on others. He served as president of St Paul’s College in Tokyo and as Bishop of Kyoto before becoming Bishop of Virginia. He predicts the church has a large opportunity in Japan and notes the atomic bombings were justified to end the war but should not be repeated. He hopes for organized peace through patience and sacrifice, and doubts he will write a book about Japan after retirement.
