Maryland lawmakers give back pay raises amid budget pressure

Maryland 188 legislators faced scrutiny over their 2001 pay hikes as budget priorities shifted. Several returned all or part of their 2000 pay raise or donated it to charity. Governor will keep his raise, bringing his salary to 125000, second highest in the nation. In Frederick County, delegates and senators mirrored the trend, with some returning half their raise and others giving it to charity, citing fairness and alignment with state employee pay freezes.

ELR 7 Would Not Stop Hinckley From Reagan Shooting

Howard J. Fezell argues that ELR 7 would not have stopped John Hinckley or prevented the Reagan assassination attempt. He notes the weapon was bought with a valid license five months earlier and a seven day waiting period would not have prevented the purchase. He contends police databases target criminal conduct not mental illness and many laws prohibit sharing treatment information. He criticizes ELR 7 as a freedom restricting measure backed by Handgun Control Inc. and calls the bill a step toward banning private firearm ownership.
