Prince George's County police questioned witnesses door to door after an off duty officer was shot multiple times while seated in his marked cruiser outside a Palmer Park liquor store where he worked as a part-time guard. Cpl. John Novabilski, 31, was in uniform when the gunman approached the car about 1130 p.m. Wednesday.
Russell Elliott Overs Jr., 32, was indicted originally for manslaughter in the 1992 death of his 14 month old child. A new grand jury indictment charged second degree murder after delays, boosting potential prison time and postponing trial for up to 180 days. Defense argued unfair process as documents and pre-trial hearings surfaced in chambers. Judge Dwyer Jr. held bond and set no new trial date.
A two story Waterside townhouse at 8020 Waterview Court was engulfed in heavy flames and smoke Friday morning as winds fueled the blaze. Firefighters arrived after a 911 call at 9:51 a.m. and opened the roof for ventilation. The fire was brought under control about an hour later and Deputy State Fire Marshal Tim Warner will investigate the cause. Residents provided water and drinks to responders.
Kraig Frank Ritzell, 33, of Silver Spring, was shot by a Montgomery County officer during a routine stop on University Boulevard after allegedly reaching toward his pants. He was hospitalized in serious condition after surgery. The officer is on paid administrative leave. internal affairs and major crimes are investigating the incident.
Laura Williams of Middletown was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash on U S 40 A as her car veered into a utility pole. She was treated by medics and flown to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown where she remained in stable condition. A federal appeals court invalidated the EPA requirement that reformulated gasoline include corn based ethanol. The three judge panel ruled the EPA had authority to set a cleaner gasoline standard but could not mandate how compliance or the exact formula should be achieved.
Two Harpers Ferry boys, aged 14 and 15, were arrested by Frederick County deputies after a dark Chevrolet Blazer stolen in Jefferson County was spotted on U.S. 40. Found in the vehicle were a .22 rifle, cash, and an Independence card taken from Washington County. The driver faced driving without a license. charges include three counts of theft and carrying a deadly weapon. The driver was placed in Noyes Detention Center. the other boy was released to his mother.
