Ruby Could Escape Electric Chair in Sanity Trial
Dallas AP report says Jack Ruby seeks an insanity verdict to avoid the electric chair. Judge Joe B. Brown will empanel a jury at the first suitable date after Ruby’s defense requested a sanity trial, claiming his condition has worsened since conviction for killing Lee Harvey Oswald. If found insane, Ruby would be committed to a state hospital.

Hoffa Yields To Union Over Legal Fees Rift
Washington AP James R Hoffa backed off from a Teamsters confrontation over whether the union should continue paying his legal bills. Vice President Harold J Gibbons said Hoffa made the decision in Chicago amid a federal case accusing him of misusing 20 million dollars from union pension reserves. The secretary treasurer and others denied funds were cut off, stressing the legality must be established by a higher authority.

Ten-day jail terms suspended for eight Towson students
Eight Towson college students received ten day jail sentences for malicious destruction of property after a weekend party at a Lutherville motel. Each was fined $254 and ordered to cover about $1,700 in damages. A directed verdict of acquittal was issued for Genevieve L. Du Pont of Wilmington.
