The one mile race serves as the final prep for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, with Correlation, the New York arrival and current favorite, among the contenders. Lytle’s long-limbed box capped the Wood Memorial at Jamaica last weekend.

Fishermen fined as river closes for spawning season

Three fishermen from Big Hunting Creek were fined $10 each for using worms instead of artificial flies. Regional Game Warden Benjamin F Phebus and Magistrate Edgar Pell issued the penalties. The Potomac River will be closed throughout May to protect spawning bass and other species, ahead of the June 1 bass season opener.
