Rescuers test new Potomac airboat in drill near Carderock
Montgomery County fire and rescue crews ran a spring drill on the Potomac near Carderock to test a 20 by eight foot airboat designed for water rescues. Underwater rescuer Carl Meaney played the victim, falling into the current five times before being saved by the crew. Last year 27 water rescues occurred in the county with six drownings, three in the Potomac, two in boats, one in a pool. Angela Withers notes nice weather draws people to the canal and river, with most drownings among men 15 to 44 and boats involved in over 20 percent.

Youth hurt when hit by school bus in Gaithersburg
A 13 year old Montgomery Village Junior High student was struck by a school bus on Watkins Mill Road near the school. Police said Timothen Mallory 9624 Kanfer Court stepped into the bus path. she was hospitalized in serious condition with broken bones after a Maryland State Police helicopter transported her to Children’s Hospital in Washington. Pedestrian error and not in a crosswalk were cited.

Flood control grant cut and farm preservation move approved
The Maryland Board of Public Works canceled a 313 650 grant for Owens Creek flood control near Thurmont over environmental concerns. The panel also approved an agricultural preservation easement on a 41.67 acre Frederick County farm worth 73 740 and a 7 300 grant to T Franklin Grabill for farm pollution control work.
