The Rev Dr Edwin H Sponseller, born in Frederick, dies suddenly at his Chambersburg home at 1 p.m. Tuesday at age 54. He served Hood College as religion and philosophy professor and held pastorates in Myersville and Greencastle, with recent tenure teaching philosophy at Shippenburg College.

Be Kind To Animals Week Promotes Adoption In Frederick
Frederick County Humane Society seeks homes for dogs and cats during Be Kind to Animals Week. On Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. pets from the overcrowded Gas House Pike shelter will be displayed at Patrick Street Prospect Plaza West Seventh Street and two North Market Street locations in downtown Frederick. The drive aims to reduce shelter crowding and promote spaying and neutering as the local crisis grows from 150 monthly adoptions in 1959 to 8,518 annual cases in 1971.

Emmitsburg Elects Sprankle Mayor in Write-in Era
Richard Sprankle was elected mayor of Emmitsburg on a Tuesday in a race with write-ins and voter abstentions. The tally showed 363 votes for mayor and 286 for commissioner, with Sprankle securing 178 votes, Ralph Irclan 169, and William Smith 10. One vote went to George Danner Jr. The write-in candidates included Sister Eleanor McNabb and Patrick Ott received 39 votes for mayor or commissioner respectively. Man Guilty Of Raping Woman In Germantown
James Neil Henegar 30 of Boyds was found guilty by jurors after a half hour deliberation of raping a 76 year old woman and daytime housebreaking at her Germantown home last year. He faces up to 20 years for rape and 10 for housebreaking. He was on parole from a California life sentence when the June 2 1971 incident occurred. Detainers and a possible additional rape case are cited. He remains jailed without bond pending pre sentence investigation.
