Cute Coed Apple Queen crowned at Shenandoah festival
Laura Mimi MacArthur 19, a Washington freshman, arrived in Winchester to be crowned queen of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. She denied a pie eating diet rumor, baked a 34-pound apple pie, and wore a navy suit with a baker’s cap. Princess Carol Prior Holzapfel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willam M. Holzapfel, represented the Maryland Horticultural Society. Weather cleared, temp rose from 20s to 60s as festivities began.

Huge Safe Moves at Court House to New Treasurer Offices
A crew of about ten men moved a massive safe belonging to County Treasurer James H. Falk from the old office to new quarters once used by the Clerk of the Circuit Court. The safe, thought by onlookers to weigh several tons, was moved in small steps under Jesse N. South. The safe’s age was uncertain, with some suspecting 19th century origin dating to the 1862 Court House. The treasurer and aides plan to move in over the weekend as the counter arrives in sections and records are moved thereafter.
